Faith Amidst Persecution and God's Justice (2 Thessalonians 1:1-12)

2 Thessalonians 1:1–12 - 1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater; 4 therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure. 5 This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering. 6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed. 11 To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

What does today’s passage say?

In today’s passage, Paul warmly tells the Thessalonians how often he gives thanks to God for them in his frequent prayers (vv. 1-5). He knows they are facing tough persecution, so he reminds them Jesus is returning to make things right - giving them relief while dealing out justice to oppressors (vv. 6-10) Paul lets them know he prays continually that God will strengthen these believers to stay faithful through trials and to powerfully accomplish all the good things He has planned for them, thereby bringing glory to Christ (vv. 11-12)

How can I apply 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12 to my life?

In his opening to this letter, Paul overflows with pastoral affection and affirmation for the Thessalonian believers. Though persecuted and struggling, they persevered in faith and love while waiting expectantly for Jesus’ return. Paul begins not by just commending them, but by letting them know he prays for them continually. He asks God to make them completely worthy of their calling in Christ. He also assures them that God will indeed finish His good work in them. Like Paul, we should faithfully uphold our fellow Christians before God’s throne, interceding for their growth in grace. We can also relate to the Thessalonians as we too hope in Christ’s coming amidst life’s trials. In this passage, we see principles about persevering together in expectation of relief found only in Jesus. We’re called to pray fervently, cling to promises of Christ’s return, and lean wholly on the Spirit. Here are some basic principles from this passage that we should apply to our lives:

1.    Pray for One Another's Faith, Love, and Perseverance to Grow and for God's Purposes to be Fulfilled (vv. 1-5): Paul starts his letter by saying he regularly prays for the Thessalonian believers. In the same way that we pray for ourselves, we must also persist in praying for fellow Christians, asking God to deepen their faith in Christ when life gets hard, grow their ability to selflessly love all people, and strengthen their determination to keep following Jesus no matter what. Though we may not face open persecution, we all need the support these prayers provide as we grow toward maturity and fulfill our purpose. Let's bring our brothers and sisters to God's throne. We should pray for Him to help all of us to become more firmly rooted in faith, more loving towards others, and more persevering through the Spirit's power. We should pray that He will use each of us powerfully where we live, work, worship, and play, all to bring praise to Christ. Just as Paul's prayers assisted the Thessalonian ministry, our prayers can empower community’s Gospel impact. As we intercede for others’ growth, we should specifically ask the Lord to give each of us the grace to share our faith boldly, serve our local church wholeheartedly, disciple young believers patiently, and minister to the poor sacrificially. In all these requests, our desire should be that Christ is glorified in our lives and ministries. May our persistent prayers unleash our community’s potential for bearing eternal fruit in the lives of many others according to God's purposes (Ephesians 1:15-21, Colossians 1:9-14, 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5).

Food for Thought: Why is praying urgently needed for fellow believers’ growth? What specific faith-building, love-expanding, perseverance-strengthening things can you request for friends this week?

2.    Take Comfort Knowing Jesus Will Return to Bring Relief for You and Justice for Those Who Persecute You (vv. 6-10): Even when following Jesus leads to hardship, we can find comfort in knowing suffering has an expiration date. Paul exhorts the Thessalonians by spotlighting Christ's coming return. When Jesus appears, He will bring sweet relief to afflicted believers and righteous justice to unrepentant sinners who reject Him. All wrongs will be made right. In these present troubles, let this promise stir hope within. Vindication and remedy belong to the Lord and are coming! Focus on that approaching Day - our Redeemer descends to save His people and judge His enemies. Stand confident in God's personal promise to repay persecutors and grant rest to the persecuted. No matter your situation today, your hardship will end and you will shine with the Savior forever. So, with perseverance, shift your gaze to Jesus' return. His delivery and justice are certainties for which you can eagerly wait. He will wipe away every tear and make all things new for His glory and your eternal joy. As you endure hostility or injustice, consciously cling to the hope of Christ's return. Let it reorient your perspective around what is eternally significant. The pain is temporary, but the reward is permanent. Stay faithful through fleeting trials, soon to be replaced with endless rejoicing in Jesus' presence (Isaiah 35:3-4, 2 Peter 3:7-13, Revelation 21:1-8).

Food for Thought: Why can reflecting on Jesus' return comfort you in suffering? Who needs to hear this hope-giving truth from you today?

3.    Depend on God to Empower You for Every Good Work to Honor Christ (vv. 11-12): Just as Paul prays for the Thessalonians, we must pray for God to make us fit and empowered for the good works He calls us to. On our own, we lack the capability, opportunity, and motivation to live out the radical Christian life. But when we depend on the Lord rather than ourselves, He transforms our weaknesses into strengths, opens doors we could never open, and plants passionate desire for Christlike service we would not have mustered. We can rely on Him to equip us powerfully to fulfill every task, however mundane or daunting, that aims to magnify Jesus. That includes courageously sharing our faith, generously meeting other’s needs, readily forgiving wrongs, serving our local church wholeheartedly, and making disciples. He wants to do through us above and beyond what we would think possible, as we yield fully to Him. Our life’s purpose is bringing glory to Christ’s name. Let’s continually look to the Spirit working in and through us to accomplish that eternal purpose (Philippians 2:12-13, Hebrews 13:20-21, 1 Peter 4:10-11).

Food for Thought: What ordinary or scary things does God want to empower you to do for His glory? How can full reliance on Him change your perspective on opportunities to honor Christ?

As we await Christ’s return, we all need encouragement and strength to persevere. By God’s grace, we can faithfully uphold one another in prayer, find comfort in the promise of relief and justice, and rely on the Spirit’s empowerment for every good deed that honors Jesus. May this passage ignite in us a passion for intercession, infuse our trials with hope, and spur us on to depend fully on the Spirit. Let’s determine to pray fervently, cling to God’s promises, and serve tirelessly as we eager await our Lord’s coming.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that You would give me a burden to lift up my fellow believers continually in prayer, asking that their faith in You would grow deeper and their love would grow bolder. I ask that You would allow me to encourage others with the promise that Jesus will return to provide rest and repay those who afflict us. Help me to rely on the Spirit’s power to live each day on mission for Your glory, carrying out the good works You prepared for me. I know that You have begun a good work in me and that You will be faithful to complete it until I stand blameless before Your presence in joy at the return of Christ.

I pray these things in the most precious name of Jesus, Amen.

2 Thessalonians 1:11 – “To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power.”

With His Blessings,

Pastor Corby
